    EK13 / 30 Day Photo Project – April 2023 Edition

    I give myself permission to just make for the sake of making without any thought to the outcome, which can be surprisingly hard. … What I would tell my younger self is this: There is no ‘right’ way to make art. The only wrong is in not trying, not doing. Don’t put barriers up that aren’t there — just get to work and make something.

    The one shared here speaks to how I am feeling at the moment, more so now than ever as I have been still been experiencing some sort of creative rut, but I am taking it as my body just letting me rest/reset for what is to come.

    I am choosing to use the #30DayPhotoProject as my excuse to snap out of it and here we are kick-starting the 2023 edition.

    I have said it before and I say it again, I started this project as a way to keep myself in the creative bubble. Even when I do not feel like creating or sharing any of my work, I would like for the #30DayProject to continue to be the push I need to keep me motivated. However, there are moments I have found myself wanting to stop the project all together. Will 2023 be the last one?

    Anyway, enough rumbling from me.

    For the April 2023 edition, I still have rolls of film that I am yet to develop, scan, edit and share with you. What better way to start with what I know best than sharing with you a roll of film images?

    With this film roll, I happen to attend a workshop in Photofusion late last year and another early this year. The first was to develop a roll of black and white film and the other was to print in the dark room. Unlike previous film rolls where I had forgotten what images I took, I happen to know some of the images in this one.

    As always, if any of the images look decent enough, I will be adding them to my PRINT SHOP later this year.

    3. All photos from the roll will be posted. Even the ‘dead’ frames.

  • EK13 / 30 Day Photo Project – November 2022 Edition

    Everything has seasons, and we have to be able to recognise when something’s time has passed and be able to move into the next season. Everything that is alive requires pruning as well, which is a great metaphor for endings.

    This intro is late, but I don’t think you actually noticed, right?

    I have been really debating on whether to keep going with this project, as mentioned in the intro of my previous edition. Deep down, I know I need to keep going as it will be good for me and my creativity.

    And this brings me back to why this intro is late.

    I actually did not know what to share with you in this final edition of 2022. I even enlisted the help of my children to come up with ideas until I remembered this tweet shared by Ilford Photo.

    The whole idea of photographing autumn on film sounded like an awesome challenge. However, I do not have film nor the time to make this happen within hours. So, I decided to use my digital camera instead and the only change I made was in the settings, making it take only monochrome photos.

    And with this, I had an idea and I went with it. I even decided to give this month’s edition a name:

    AUTUMN COLOURS

    Imagine looking through the viewfinder of your camera and you see the images in colour, but when you take the photograph and look back on your camera screen, it is in monochrome. And this proved to be a very interesting way of seeing the world and documenting it for this project.

    As November is the last month of Autumn, the tweet shared above and the fact I have never made any seasonal work as much just seemed right for this project. And with any project, looking for different ways of seeing is how I came up with the name. Also, this is the first time I have actually named any of my 30 day photo projects.

    So for this final 30 Day Photo Project of 2022, I will be sharing with you some autumnal photos in monochrome.

  • Excellence Awards 2022

    On 23rd September 2022, I was presented with an award for excellence at the inaugural Capital City College Group (CCCG) Excellence Awards. This was as a result of being a participant in the entrepreneurship programme Visionnaires. As many as 60 students and apprentices were awarded on the night for their achievements across the various colleges run by CCCG. Read more about the event here.

    My award story started in July 2019, when I attended a FREE workshop ‘Start Your Own Business’ which was created by Pablo Lloyd OBE as part of Visionnaires. It was a 4-day workshop that helped me figure out the next steps of building my photography business after I finished my studies. I shared a little about it in this blog post.

    When I attended this workshop, I was studying for my MA in Documentary Photography and Photojournalism, but this course hardly teaches you how to run a photography business. As a creative, I know only too well the challenges I have had just getting my photography business up and running and I believe initiatives like this are the way forward in addressing those challenges.

    When I got an email from the Capital City College Group awards team that I was nominated for an award by Amanda Dickens and won, I was excited and humbled by the recognition.

    On the day of the award ceremony, I was so happy to have my children present with me to receive this award. As much as I was being recognised, I wanted them to share this moment with them. After all, most of the stuff I do is for them. The award ceremony was amazing and a HUGE congratulations to all who were recognised on the day.

    I just want to take this opportunity to thank Pablo, Amanda and everyone at Visionnaires for their hard work in helping not just me, but thousands of others see potential in themselves to achieve their goals. And also for putting my name forward for this award. To my family for all their support and myself for being courageous in taking the necessary steps to better myself.

    Write every day; never give up; it’s supposed to be difficult; try to find some pleasure and reward in the act of writing, because you can’t look for praise from editors, readers, or critics. In other words, tips that are much easier to give than to take.

In other words, keep taking photographs and sharing even when you think no one is looking at them.

    I am sharing this with you as I have been in some sort of rut lately and other priorities have been taking over my time. As a result, my enthusiasm to continue with this project has been faltering lately. However, when I was looking for quotes on not giving up, as I do like sharing quotes here on my blog, the one above resonated with me.

    It resonated because, I am not a good writer, but I still do write on my blog and newsletter, no matter what. Also, I never stop photographing completely as I always find myself taking pictures even though they do not make sense at the time.

    I started the 30 Day Photo Project so I can give myself space to experiment with my photography, share my images and also connect with other creatives through collaborations. A little way of keeping myself in the creative bubble even in moments like this when I don’t feel like creating or sharing my work.

    Since my last 30DPP in June, I have been in a state of wanting to stop the project, but I am constantly being reminded of the connections I have made through the months I have collaborated with other photographers and the work that I have created during this project that has gone to (and will) be featured in exhibitions and competitions. So, as a promise to myself, I have to keep it going for a little bit longer.

    For the September 2022 edition, I wasn’t too sure what I would be sharing until four days ago. I was stuck but remembered that I do have film strips which I haven’t seen in a while since I had them developed. I will be sharing with you one of those strips, all 36 frames, even the ‘dead’ ones. If any of the images do look decent, I will be putting them up for sale on my PRINT SHOP.
