    Personal: Family First

That moment you take a minute to reflect. Family support is EVERYTHING esp. when they came out to see my FMP Free Range Show back in 2016.

My daily challenges as a mother who is trying to work as a freelance photographer and at the same follow my passion, is that there are not enough hours in a day.

On a serious note, just getting to juggle between being a wife, mother and a photographer is hard enough as your family esp. children come first as the expense of getting childcare when an opportunity to go out on a job or assignment always makes you analyse whether is it worth it. Also, people don’t take creatives seriously and always want to undercut us when it comes to paying for work done.

I am here for #SupportingWorkingMums as the struggle is real.

So, if I quote you for a job, please keep in mind that I have bills just like you. And, when I mention my kids, don’t assume I cannot do the job. It is not that complicated. They are the very reason I am putting myself forward for the job.

Thank you and stay blessed, always!

Side note: This article by photographer Sophie Ebrard puts this struggle into a much better perspective of how as women we struggle to get the job, keep the job and still strive to raise our children in healthy environments.

  • Project: Fallen Petals

Fallen Petals (2019) – Part of the ‘Remnants’ series

In a flower shop with a friend and I spot these petals on the window display. They looked beautiful, but they also symbolised how fleeting life is. Their life as being part of a whole flower ended that day. They never got to leave the shop to adorn someone’s space.

Just for this moment, I got to enjoy their beauty, as I knew they would soon be discarded to make way for the next fresh batch of fallen petals.

  • Project: Remnants

    Untitled (2019)

Working on a new project about things that I leave behind. Things, objects or feelings that sometimes I let go of without even thinking about it, but other times they cause a lot of worry and pain.

Lately, I have been thinking about life and death. There have been at least three deaths this year alone that have been close to me and have affected me in different ways. It is weird/funny how something so guaranteed in life can cause so much anguish. Then you are reminded that nothing lasts forever. Life is too short.

This got me thinking about how I view certain things and situations. So, I started photographing random small bits of my life that I will never physically get back, but the memory will still linger on, in some cases.

And I suppose, this is why I love photography.

It imprints. It makes permanent. It immortalises.

  • Project: Painted Sky (Ongoing Series)

Painted Sky (2019) – Part of the ‘When We Forget to Look Up’ series.

I was just messing around in my garden in the evening enjoying the warm summer weather when I noticed the sky looking like a silky painted canvas.

The floodlights can be seen as an addition to the sky scene or as an irritant that spoils such tranquillity that the sky possesses.

Either way, we cannot fail to be mesmerised by its beauty.

  • Event: Blinky Bill Solo Album Promo in London

Event: Blinky Bill Solo Album Promo with Dope Saint Jude
    Venue: Birthdays (Dalston)
    Date: 14th October 2018

This event was one of the dopest music events I had been to in a long while. I did not intend on taking pictures on the night, but just in case, I carried my camera with me and I am glad that I did.

Blinky Bill is a Kenyan rapper, DJ, producer and experimenter who’s approach to music pushes one’s limits and invites you to enjoy in its freedom of expression and creativity. He performed Birthdays as part of his European tour to promote his new solo album “Everyone’s Just Winging It and Other Fly Tales” which I have to say it was 🔥 from the first bar to the last.

Dope Saint Jude, a music artist from South Africa opened the show. She is a rapper and producer with a defiant, life-affirming queer perspective. (Source: artist website)
