  • I Have Backed…Unscrambling Africa

“Images of Africa, by Africans, in Africa.”

The perfect motto for a project that I wish I was a part of.

Four artists/storytellers from Kenya will be embarking on an epic journey of Southern Africa, covering 13 cities, 10 countries in around 8 weeks. This will see them photograph, film, draw and experience Africa in ways that most of us can only dream of.

    The artists / storytellers are:

    Mutua Matheka

    Joe Were

    Lulu Kitololo

    Josh Kisamwa

A journey of this magnitude can only happen with financial backing from people like you and me. I have already done my bit and this is where you come in.

Please show your support by visiting the Unscrambling Africa – Kickstarter campaign page and become a backer by pledging as little as $8/£10. And once you have done this, please do not forget to share the campaign with your followers on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram….etc.

    Thank you for stopping by…….

  • Participants Found…

…to take part in my photography project.

It wasn’t easy as I have a very weird nervous way of talking to strangers and asking if they would like to take part in my project. I soon realised how important it is to have someone in the sidelines to help you with certain things. Keep you in check and all that.

For the most part, this involved them having bare shoulders and we know how that goes in autumn and you are all layered up. Good thing, the studio I had booked for the shoot was kind of private.

Anyway, I used whatever resources I had at my disposal and went for it. Approached willing participants from around campus. I got quiet a few weird stares, but I managed to get at least 10 students willing to take part. Even I was shocked.

The rest were some of my colleagues.

I am still shooting the project in the hope to be finished by the end of this month. My determination is fuelled by words I keep uttering to my son, “Please finish it, as you have already started.”

This particular assignment is making me approach total strangers, ask them for something and build some sort of relationship.

After all, if I am to be portrait photographer, I have to keep practising how to talk to people from all walks of life – family and friends excluded – as it is the most daunting thing I would ever do.

This is for the COURAGE & CONFIDENCE to see this project through.

  • Galleries, art and photography

The National Gallery – Sainsbury Wing

This year, I have vowed to myself to visit more galleries. After all, the more I attend lectures at University, I realise the importance of art in photography. Hundreds of years before photography, people relied on paintings as they used to give us a sense of places or people you wouldn’t have access to. How they looked like or behaved. Whether it was a true depiction or not, we will never know, but one thing remains certain is there was always and still is a demand for art.

Photography however, came and changed all that. Somehow depicting the true nature of what was and still is, objects in front of the camera that is ‘eventually’ captured in their simplest form. Same question that still lingers is whether a true depiction of the subject matter was captured in some cases. Images taken will always have a story behind them. The same way as when an artist does a painting.

So, being a last minute.com person, I rushed to see the Seduced by Art: Photography Past & Present, an exhibition that recently concluded at The National Gallery and it was best at explaining all this.

“View Old Master painting through a new lens… a provocative look at how early and contemporary photographers have made use of fine art traditions.”
    Excerpt from the exhibition leaflet

The exhibition was awesome, but I wish it had more time after my lecture on Modernity the following day so I could go back and see it again, as some of the stuff the lecturer discussed I saw at the exhibition. Perhaps in hindsight, I got to enjoy and understand the lecture more.

Please watch the video playlist from The National Gallery as it gives a better insight on what the exhibition was all about.

    Update: 23 Jan 2013
Just realised the video link was letting me share the playlist. Please look for clips where Tina Barney and Jorma Puranen discuss how paintings influence them in their photography work in relation to the exhibition.
